RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
