Minister Says MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Vehicles.

A defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been told to refrain from discussing secret matters in all vehicles.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in China-made vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader security environment underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official activities, including transport use to discussions habits.
