Our Leading Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Top Position.

Initially, this album might appear more like a challenging scholarly examination rather than a new pop album by an artist whose previous hit featured a global K-pop star. Split across four different sections and voiced in 13 languages, this is a breathtaking symphonic album exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal change, frequently via the lens of various women saints. The end of a romance—a theme handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars skyward here, supported by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of contributors. The pure ambition alone renders the efforts of other pop stars appear rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to avoid dry academic chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, and full praise going to the artist. While it's not the first time album to fuse the past with the present, its scale are far greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more pronounced. The element that truly elevates this fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist during her peak, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing hearts apart, the listener still desire to be right there through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That playful energy comes forth brightly on a stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge thuds down with cartoonish impact. The track then segues into the wild single featuring racing strings, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic of this album is that you rarely exactly understand—or even want to know—where you will go next."

Nearly each track concludes in a completely distinct point from where it started. One moment examines the transient trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration only to collapsing into electronic chaos. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused style begins out dark and sinister, with menacing beats, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth its rough edges.

The Bridge Of Art and Pop

Another crucial achievement of the album involves straddling the line between bold experimentation and broad accessibility. This is little surprise that the album has achieved the artist's first release to break into the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in English swells on a refrain that feels to collect increasingly nagging melodies while it spins skyward. That trick is echoed by a different expansive ballad that expands and contracts, weaving multiple melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating a former lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album is pop on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its own inherent excess. This is a deep well of buried gems that requires patience to completely explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While some big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the guests around the table, some intoxicated on holy wine, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
